A busy day and it's not finished yet. This morning we went to the Uganda Museum. I couldn't walk round so once I had settled myself next to some musical instruments, I was in my element.
Then we went to the slums and met David, who having been a street kid himself, knows the desperate need for the boys to have hope for a better future and works voluntarily with them. He spends time with lads in different areas of Kampala. They sing and talk, he helps find them safe spaces to sleep and tries to get them back home, back to school or learning a trade. There's always someone catches your eye that you make a connection with. The photo of a weary looking me (after a lot of walking through a narrow lane uphill with very uneven ground) is with Enoch. It broke my heart when we had to leave. I've worked with the homeless for years, but meeting these lads living on the street was an experience I will never forget. Lunch was an interesting dish, beef in a peanut sauce served in banana leaves and lots of local produce, yam, banana, maize products ( none of which I know the name of yet, sorry). Back to the hotel with a drive through the city, Boda Boda (taxi bikes) everywhere carrying metal sheets, stacks of cardboard wood, fruit and all-sorts of goods as well as between one ( legal) and three adults sometimes carrying toddlers and babies too! There were stalls and sellers on every path selling fruit, sunglasses, flip flops and shoes and clothes, goats and huge cattle wandering along next to the road. Out tonight for a cultural music and dance night. |
